Nowadays Internet is one of the most valuable resources. Every day we use different devices to access internet to provide information, work or just for having fun.
The free access to the web is the key to become whatever we want, wherever we are and whenever we can. Right now, we pay an amount to our internet provider for being able to access depending on the speed we want.
But in the future this could change and we could pay to access also specific applications. We are talking about Net Neutrality: some rules for having a free and open internet space.

The word “Net Neutrality” was used for the first time in the last period, but the concept was born in the telegraph time. In 1860 an American law declared:

…the messages that are transmitted have to be received in a neutral way. The only exception is for the government communication: these have priority.

In the beginning of internet, the most important advantage was the chance to upload a website in a server and let it available for everyone with a modem.

All the servers had to respect the same rules and none provider could be preferential because everyone was connected to the same net, no matter the speed of the connection.
Net Neutrality allows all the contents to be treated in the same way, going at the same speed. The providers that are the owner of the infrastructure cannnot discern the different information.

The Federal Communications Commission is an American independent organism that governs national and international transmissions.

In December 2017 it abrogated some rules that protected the Net Neutrality in the USA. Specifically, it has been revoked one of the rules introduced by Obama in 2015 that regulated the topic for the first time.

Who is going to take advantages from the situation?

The ISP (the companies owners of the communications structures), they can split the internet traffic in different number of lanes. They have the power to provide the data of a specific application with a determined speed. What does it mean? If the speed of your provider is 30, the ISP can decide to reduce the speed, for a service, to 10. Because they want to be paid more to transfer a kind of information.

Americans already reacted to this news. 21 States and lawyers associations started causes against the FCC.

Moreover, communities started an online war to protect the Net Neutrality, planning petitions with the purpose to call into question the new rules.

Net is the new place for priviledges because there is someone that can take decisions for others.

WHAT ABOUT EUROPE?

The situation in Europe is safer: the European Parliament expressed its purpose to protect the Net Neutrality with the regolamentation UE 2015/2120. With this law the access to a free net is saved and
But in Europe too we have an example of how it could be without Net Neutrality.
In Portugal, for example, there are some rules that allow some schemes to determine different prices depending on the applications used. In Portugal, the mobile provider Meo offers different packs.

Here an example.
Basically, more interests you have, more you pay.

net neutrality

This kind of models are quite dangerous because it will be even more difficult, for new players, to enter in the market. The new players will be automatically excluded.
Moreover, without the Net Neutrality, an ISP could deny the access to an app, unless the client won’t pay a new amount.
Are you enough worried about?
It wasn’t our purpose. But we wanted to give you awareness. It’s the first step to protect our rights.
